NYC DOT – PlaNYC
In 2008 the NYC DOT launched the sustainable streets initiative. PlaNYC. This initiative created 90 miles of new bike lanes, and the select bus service. NYC took 49 acres of road space, traffic lanes, and parking spots away from cars and turned them into bike lanes, public plazas and pedestrian areas. The select bus service is a cost effective transit that makes riding the bus more like riding the subway. It has dedicated bus lanes, transit signal priority which turns traffic lights green as a bus approaches, and off board fare collection which allows patrons to pay with a metro card from a sidewalk kiosk to avoid congestion while boarding. These improvements to the bus system were designed to encourage more people to ride the bus. The New York City DOT also recycles 40% of the asphalt used in road repairs.
