The Blue Ribbon Commission and the MTA
In 2007 the blue ribbon commission was developed to work with the MTA to make public transport more sustainable. The commission addressed the issues of carbon emissions, facilities, and growth. To address carbon emission issues the commission developed a plan to draw 80% of its energy from renewable resources by 2050 and will introduce a “green” metro that will allow citizens to use donations to improving the metro as a tax writeoff. To improve facilities the commission recommends that all new transportation buildings should be built to LEED silver standards and older buildings renovated to silver standards. To grow the system the MTA will ensure that all future transit is made as green as possible and work to improve transit coverage throughout the city to increase transit usage.
